The hallmark of the Colorado PhysTEC project is the undergraduate Learning Assistant (LA) program. Learning assistants assist with in-class Tutorials (developed by the Washington PER group) and with help-sessions for many courses in the department. This program allows students to experience the positive aspects of teaching and also serves as a recruitment tool into teacher certification. It is very popular, with over 50 students applying for approximately 18 spots each semester. In the Fall of 2006, PhysTEC faculty from Seattle Pacific and Arkansas visited Colorado to gain first-hand exposure to the Learning Assistant program, and to observe how Colorado manages its NSF Noyce fellowship program (both SPU and Arkansas have been awarded Noyce fellowships as well).
